Personalised subject lines lift replies by 30.5%

Reply-rate uplift from personalised subject lines

Generic subject

From the same Backlinko and Pitchbox twelve-million-email dataset, outreach subject lines that incorporated the recipient's name, site name, or a reference to recently published content lifted reply rates by 30.5 per cent against the generic template baseline. The effect is independent of body-copy personalisation and stacks with it. Subject-line personalisation works because it changes whether the email gets opened at all; reply-rate lift downstream is a near-mechanical function of the opens being human-targeted rather than template-blasted. For outreach programmes already running personalisation in the body, ignoring the subject line leaves measurable reply volume on the table.

Methodology: Backlinko and Pitchbox twelve million email dataset; reply rate lift for personalised subject lines against generic templates. About LinkPanda.

Do personalized subject lines increase response rates?

Yes. In the Backlinko and Pitchbox twelve million email dataset, subject lines incorporating the recipient’s name, site name, or a reference to recently published content lifted replies by 30.5% against the generic template baseline. Among subject line statistics this is the cleanest large sample measure of the email subject line response rate in link building outreach. The effect is independent of body personalisation and the two stack, roughly doubling replies when combined. Baseline numbers sit on our outreach reply rate page.

What makes a subject line personalised?

In the dataset: the recipient’s name, their site’s name, or a reference to content they recently published.

Does it work without personalising the body?

Yes, the 30.5% lift is independent of body copy. Running both stacks near linearly and roughly doubles the template baseline.
